First of the season

First of the season
We're a bit out of practice so soon in the year but it won't take us long until we have this picnic and MG malarky well sorted. Once we have some kind of routine established, we may possibly be able to leave the house without hours of planning and packing beforehand.

This weekend we blew the dust off the car and the cool bag, and took off into the Peaks. Being creatures of habit we headed for our favourite picnic spot overlooking Ilam in Dovedale. Fortunately, we remembered to take the most essential item - midge spray - the midges make a beeline for me and I get bitten unbearably. They don't seem to bother Les...wonder why?

Dovedale is a beautiful part of the world; I have some lovely memories of following the Dove through the valley and clambering about on Lionhead Rock.

I haven't been to Ilam for years... do I remember a largish country house there, or am I thinking of somewhere else?

Love the car, my mum had an MG in yellow. I always love the thought of having a picnic, but we only get as far as taking a flask! x

You're right, there is a large house there, Ilam Hall, now a youth hostel. What a beautiful spot to stay! M

What a fantastically evocative picture you have there!

We used to camp in Dovedale when I was little (6 of us in a single camper van - my parents must have been saints I think!) I still have a piece of Blue John somewhere as a souvenir of one trip.

Midges and mozzies dislike Vitamin B so take a VitB pill everyday or eat lots of Marmite. This works a treat as my hubby was sick to death of being the mozzies meal each day when he walked the dog.

Thanks for the advice...I think I have heard about taking B12 tablets, but didn't know whether it works. Now I know, I'm going to take them every day and hope for a bite free summer.
I can recommend Dovedale...it's a beautiful area to visit. M

I've diligently taken the B12 prior to my visit to India some years ago (I'm allergic to mosquito bites) and I can tell you that Indian mosquitos now have vitamin-fortified blood. And as for why they bit you and not Les, that's easy! You're sweeter!

Well that's true...I'm glad somebody recognises it! M
