Some plants seem to manage despite the cold weather. While the flowers of dahlias and out door fuchsias have succumbed to last night's frost, the strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) is flowering beautifully. It's very unusual in that it has flowers at the same time as fruit...if you look closely, you can see the still green, but soon to be red, strawberries hanging amongst the pink blooms.

Like Ellie - mine never lasted very long - but I do love them. We have neutral clay soil with chalk underneath, but I think they prefer acid?
I'd like to go to Eire where they grow wild, so I am told. -

Gosh I wish I had some life left in my garden. x

It's a beautiful tree (shrub) isn't it? Sadly, I made the mistake of buying a larger specimen and it died. Smaller plants usually take better, so I should known better.
Still got some dahlias here, just about - but then it's raining!
