I love a roaring fire. Do you toast the bread over the open fire? xxx

What a lovely image that conjures! My cockles are all warm and fuzzy...
We got the local forge to make us a toasting fork so we could burn (or make) toast in front of the flames - it tastes so much better than grilled I think. And crumpets, muffins and teacakes.
And it's almost time to dig out the chestnut roasting pan, too.
As you say, there are some compensations for winter. -

Yes, we make toast on the fire using our old toasting fork. Sometimes the bread drops off into the coals, which is a bit unfortunate!
We also roast chestnuts at Christmas.
It's a bit difficult to get them just right, so I ought to look out for a pan...that's a really good idea. -

How about getting in a supply of marshmallows? They'll make all the difference.

This picture is one of the things autumn/winter is all about for me. Wish I was the proud owner of a working fireplace!!

I miss having fires. In our last place we had a Rayburn in the kitchen and a fire in the living room. There's something primeval about fire and humans - it quickly puts us into a more contemplative mental state.
Enjoy your fire.
Tom.
